Position Summary

The Lead Histopathologist oversee daily operations while ensuring that the histopathology lab operates efficiently and the work is of the highest quality. Daily tasks will include but not be limited to: oversight and performance of preparations of histological samples and sections as well as special staining procedures; developing new immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and FISH protocols; Perform laboratory procedures to create tissue sections from both FFPE and frozen tissue; oversee quality control procedures in the laboratory for physical specimens; perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Adapting and developing new staining techniques and protocols for lab will be essential. The lead sets up and maintains records, files, and documents related to specific projects.

The Lead Histopathologist will take part in teaching students and other trainees in histopathology techniques, consult and advise customers regarding projects, and guide and evaluate technicians. The incumbent should maintain the depth of skills necessary for the laboratory to contribute to teaching and research within the university. The incumbent monitors status of supply inventory and equipment needs of laboratory, orders new items, and schedules maintenance as needed in a timely manner. Support development of budget process and setting rates.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s Degree in scientific discipline with two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols.

Expected to be available during laboratory operating hours (8:00am-4:00pm).

Receives work requests, distributes workload, and checks quality of work done by technical staff.

Prepares slides and specimens for medical and scientific lectures, research, and laboratory exercises.

Prior experience in tissue processing for immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques

Must be able to read and understand technical documents, operate scientific instruments and computers, perform detailed work, and manage multiple tasks.

Must operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.

Will be required to participate in occupational health and safety programs. Handles materials that may be fragile, expensive, toxic, volatile, noxious, flammable, or otherwise dangerous

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in scientific discipline
Prior experience developing FISH and paraffin immunofluorescence protocols in a research lab environment

Prior experience constructing tissue microarrays
