Position Summary

The University at Buffalo School of Nursing invites applicants for a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Clinical Faculty position. This is a full time (12 month) appointment to teach in undergraduate and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) PMHNP programs. Responsibilities include classroom and online didactic teaching, mentoring, supervising, and evaluating students in clinical and simulated learning environments, and supervising students in DNP capstone project courses. Responsibilities also include planning, developing and implementing evidence-based, innovative, and interactive learning experiences for the adult learner across classroom and clinical learning environments for undergraduate and post-master certificate and doctor in nursing practice (DNP) students.

• Maintains clinical nursing expertise and adheres to ethical and professional nursing standards of practice.
• Complies with State, University, Clinical Agency, and professional regulations and requirements.
• Communicates regularly with course coordinator, faculty, and program director(s).
• Meets clinical instructor role responsibilities related to service and scholarship according to rank.
• Collaborates with faculty to plan, design, and implement classroom, laboratory, simulated, and practical learning experiences. Leads simulated and laboratory based student learning experiences.
• Establishes collaborative and positive working relationships that respect the dignity, worth, and culture of students, faculty, staff, colleagues, peers, patients, families, communities, agency nurse managers, and interdisciplinary agency teams and staff. Participates in agency/organizational/unit orientations.
• Utilizes informatics and a variety of innovative teaching strategies and techniques for adult learners in clinical, classroom, online, and simulated learning environments that promote critical thinking, clinical competency, and achievement of course outcomes.
• Serves as a professional role model and mentor to facilitate and ensure the planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe, quality, interdisciplinary, evidence-based patient-centered care that is culturally sensitive, competent, ethical, and compassionate throughout student practical, classroom, online, and simulated learning experiences.
• Assists students with the transfer, utilization, and synthesis of knowledge into current learning activities and practical experiences through establishment of physical and emotional environments conducive to effective teaching and learning.
• Establishes early intervention through specific written guidance and referral for on-campus lab remediation for students demonstrating unsafe nursing practice and/or who lack clinical preparation. Provides a post-intervention follow-up summative and formative evaluation using prescribed evaluation tools regarding the student’s practice behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Terminal degree or enrollment in PhD or DNP program and advanced practice graduate degree from an accredited School of Nursing and national certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. At least two years of experience in Advanced Practice or DNP in Psychiatry. National certification as PMHNP across the lifespan and current New York State licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with prescriptive authority required. Excellent clinical and interpersonal skills with ability to work as an interdisciplinary healthcare team member are essential. Must maintain clinical practice in specialty area.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience teaching in classroom and online environments and clinical practicum supervision experience at the baccalaureate and/or advanced practice level. Familiarity with inpatient and community based psychiatric and behavioral health agencies in the Western New York (WNY) region.
