Position Summary

The Department of Anthropology at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, invites applications for a distinguished scholar at the rank of Full Professor, to serve as Chair of an established department. Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor with a profile indicative of ready promotion to Full Professor will be considered.

The successful candidate will be a creative and energetic leader with an innovative research program, a dynamic record of publication and externally funded grants or fellowships, who values the connections among subfields and will foster robust collaboration within the department and across the university. In addition to scholarship, a demonstrable record of effective communication, enthusiasm for students and teaching, mentoring of both junior faculty and graduate students is necessary. Ability to work as a team, modeling collegiality and collaboration is key. The new Chair will lead current faculty and help recruit additional faculty to enhance and extend the strengths of the department. Experience in strategic planning and public engagement would also be desirable.

The University at Buffalo is an R1, AAU institution, and the flagship of the New York State system. The candidate would join UB at a time when Buffalo and the Western New York region are experiencing a cultural and economic renaissance. The department has specializations in the Archaeology of Europe, Biological Anthropology, the Cultural Anthropology of Europe and Latin America, Evolutionary Anthropology and Morphology, and Medical Anthropology. In addition to the BA, MA, and PhD in Anthropology, the department offers a specialized MA degree in Medical Anthropology and contributes to the MA in Critical Museum Studies and the graduate program in Evolution, Ecology and Behavior.

The Chair will have oversight in management of numerous resources, including the Marian White Research Museum, the UB Anthropology Library, the Samuel M. Paley Library of Eastern Mediterranean and Near Eastern archaeology, and the UB Archaeological Survey, a not-for-profit contract archaeology division. The department also maintains extensive laboratories, research centers and institutes for which the Chair provides coordination, including the Buffalo Human Evolutionary Morphology Lab, the Social Systems GIS Lab, the Comparative Primate Anatomy Lab, the Anthropology of Europe Lab, and the affiliated interdisciplinary Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA).

Tenured faculty members in the department are expected to teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level in addition to advising students; conducting research leading to publications; presenting at professional venues; and providing service to the department, College and University as a whole. Course release is granted for faculty serving in administrative capacities such as Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate should hold the appropriate terminal degree and have a record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with the rank of Full Professor. Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor with a profile indicative of ready promotion to Full Professor will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous administrative experience in a higher education setting. Experience in strategic planning and public engagement would also be desirable.
