Position Summary

Buprenorphine Academic Educator – Position is based in upstate NY. The practitioner will be working in conjunction with the New York State Department of Health to institute a Prescriber Education Program modeled after the academic detailing approach. This educational program will be designed to provide health care providers and clinical staff with an evidence-based, non-commercial source of the latest, objective information about the use of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The main function of the prescriber program is the statewide provision of on-site educational sessions to Physicians, NPs, PAs, and other staff to provide education and assistance. These sessions will take place in clinics and practitioners’ offices, or other venues (lecture halls, conference rooms) as needed.
Summary of job functions:
• Educate prescribers (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants) about the use of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Office visits will comprise most of job activity (extensive travel throughout NY State will be required).
• Provide prescribers with key evidence-based recommendations
• Enhance prescribers’ knowledge of evidence-based prescribing practices in an effort to increase the number of practitioners prescribing buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder and/or to increase the number of patients treated by the practitioners with buprenorphine
• Gather feedback from prescribers regarding needs and barriers to implementing optimal pharmacotherapy for the treatment of opioid use disorder in their patients

Minimum Qualifications

• Either Physician (MD/DO) or, Nurse Practitioner (NP) or, Physician Assistant (PA) or, PharmD (or equivalent clinical experience )
• Must be licensed to practice in New York State (or be eligible to obtain NYS license). Must possess strong clinical skills, knowledge and expertise in general pharmacotherapy.
• Abilities required: organized; self-motivated; personable; ability to work as part of a cohesive team.
• Ability to clearly present materials in line with identified provider need and patient population.
• Must have reliable transportation for travel throughout NY state (except NYC) to conduct in-person, academic detailing visits and to carry necessary tools, materials, and equipment, as needed. Public transportation may not be available within certain territories.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with patients on buprenorphine in a clinical setting, knowledge of harm reduction, opioid use disorder, and substance use treatment, and with experience in presenting educational material in small group settings.

Physical Demands

Ability to transport up to 25 pounds and travel to presentation sites.
