Position Summary

The Office of Immigration Services, University at Buffalo (UBIS) invites applications for the position of Legal Assistant.

The Legal Assistant will:

Support employment based immigration services for the University’s non-citizen faculty and staff, including preparing related Department of Homeland Security, Department of State and Department of Labor forms, petitions and applications. Liaise with the individuals involved, employing departments, and University Human Resources.

Prepare and issue documents for Exchange Scholars’ J visa applications and those of their dependents. Communicate with prospective and current visiting scholars; coordinate Exchange Visitor Program support with other University departments; help validate scholars in SEVIS. Support orientation programs for incoming scholars and dependents; monitor exchange scholar status.

Help disseminate information on procedures related to filing the various applications and petitions noted above, set up and maintain case files, request and verify client documentation. Maintain related office databases and prepare associated reports

Conduct legal research and summarize and report findings. Monitor various publications, newsletters, list serves, etc. for changes to regulations that impact Immigration Services clients.

The Legal assistant will also supervise the department’s student employees, and assist with general office duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree plus 2 to 3 years of related work experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree plus 1 year of related work experience.

Experience conducting legal research; and experience preparing employed-based filings and/or exchange visitor forms.

This position requires great precision, accuracy, and outstanding attention to detail.

Also required are an excellent organizational ability and computer skills, strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrated intercultural skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks with deadlines simultaneously and a “take-charge” attitude.

US Citizenship or legal permanent residency is required, as mandated by federal regulations.
